Baking Your Own Natural Dog Cakes

Our dogs may not know one day from another, but as our furry companions, we want to celebrate their special events, such as birthdays and holidays. To keep your dog in tip-top shape while letting him enjoy a very special treat, consider baking your own natural dog cakes at home.

Basic Ingredients

Dog cakes can be made a variety of ways, but the basic ingredients are pretty much the same. Whole-wheat flour or oats, peanut butter, shredded carrots and honey are all health-conscious elements to the perfect dog cake. Depending on the size of your dog, your ingredient sizes may vary; check the recipe thoroughly to ensure your dog gets a proper serving.

Additions and Extra Flavors

Celebrations are a great reason to indulge your dog, and you can safely do so with some great dog-friendly flavors and cake additions. Pay homage to the King with a peanut butter, banana and bacon cake, or class it up with some crushed candied pecans and soft apple pieces. If you're celebrating a winter holiday, combine canned pumpkin or yams with marshmallows and a little brown sugar or carob for a traditional cake that is sure to please.

Be Careful with Additions

As much as you might want to spoil Fido, some additions are no good for dogs. Raisins and grapes are hazardous to a dog's health, as is dark chocolate. On the savory end, avoid flavoring the cake with garlic or onions. If you add nuts, be certain not to use walnuts, and don't use more than a small handful for a medium-sized dog. A good general rule: If you're not sure of an ingredient's toxicity, don't use it.

Other Versions

While the basic measurements for a typical round cake pan are similar -- 1 egg, 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1 tsp baking powder, 2 shredded carrots, 1/3 cup honey and 1 cup flour -- don't stop there! With the basics under your belt, you can make all-natural dog cupcakes and throw a whole canine party for your furry friend. Consider whipping up a batch and stopping by your local humane society to share the celebration, and some love.
