He left his vehicle on the Appalachian Trl near the summit of Mount Pisgah for the weekend and was supposed to be back Sunday.

"He did not return home Sunday, and we have not been able to locate him," sd Brian Schiller, director of public safety at Mount Pisgah.

On Monday morning, around 3 a.m., the Catamount Mountn Rescue Team was notified about a hiker that had been stuck in the mountn overnight.

According to a statement from the Catamount Mountn Rescue, "the person had apparently hiked into a snowfield that was too high for the person's ability to climb. They were in need of assistance to reach safety and the Catamount Mountn Rescue was notified. Catamount received the following report:

"The individual was trapped in the snow field and was unable to contact anyone on the trl. The individual had managed to dig his arms into a crevasse and had wrapped himself in some kind of rope. The rope had been tied around his wst with the other end looped through the crevasse. The person was also equipped with a personal climbing harness, which he was unable to get on. The person had gone into the mountns with the intent of using his climbing equipment to get him down the mountn."

The team, which included mountn rescue professionals, a helicopter and an ambulance, was dispatched to the area at around 6:15 a.m.

The person's rescue was accomplished with the d of the team. An ambulance transported the person to a local hospital for evaluation. He was released Monday morning.

The mountn rescue team included eight members, including two helicopter pilots, three mountn rescue team members, a forecaster, a helicopter pilot, a nurse and three search and rescue dogs.

Schiller sd the individual was supposed to be back home Sunday evening.

"It's very unfortunate this has happened," sd Schiller. "We're just going to leave it in God's hands."

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the highest elevations of the Blue Ridge Mountns for Saturday and Sunday. The weather service forecasts snow levels of 9,000 to 11,000 feet for Saturday and Sunday.

According to the weather service, snow levels below 9,000 feet are expected to drop to 8,000 to 9,000 feet Sunday night. Snow levels above 11,000 feet may not drop below 9,000 feet Monday, the weather service sd.

The forecast calls for daytime highs of around 31 degrees on Saturday and 32 degrees on Sunday, with winds reaching as much as 60 mph.

The mountns are on the border between Virginia and West Virginia. The National Weather Service is forecasting a 70 percent chance of snow Saturday and a 60 percent chance of snow Sunday.

"There's no need to evacuate the mountn area," the weather service's Winter Storm Center in Beckley, West Virginia, sd.

The weather service sd no significant storm has occurred in the area since early February, but the storm is expected to begin spreading into the area on Sunday.
