Neko flies cat toy

A neko flies cat toy is a feline toy that features a plush stuffed cat head which can be manipulated to fly around using a spring mechanism. The toy was introduced in Japan in 1990 as a mascot for the anime series Sailor Moon and is popular among Japanese cat owners. It was also licensed in North America for distribution by the Toei Company, a Japanese film and video production company that produces anime, which was owned by Warner Bros. Warner Home Video later released it under its Hanna-Barbera label.

History

In 1989, the Toei Company was in need of a mascot to promote a new animated project entitled Sailor Moon which would be released later that year. The Japanese anime company chose to develop the "Cat-in-Crown" as a new mascot to represent the Sailor Moon anime series. The character was introduced in 1990 in Japan and became very popular in the country. The toy was also introduced in North America by the Toei Company's sister company, Warner Bros. Warner Home Video released it under the Hanna-Barbera label in North America and it was later distributed in Europe by Universal Cartoon Studios. In 1993, the Cat-in-Crown was a merchandising item at the San Diego Comic-Con and Toy Fair.

Design

The toy is a plush cat head which features a spring mechanism that allows the cat to flutter when one of its ears is pulled. The toy is made from soft plush and is shaped like a stuffed cat head. The Cat-in-Crown's body is brown, it has a face which resembles that of a real cat, it has long black ears and a yellow nose.

The Cat-in-Crown was designed by Yumi Miyamoto and Taku Kajikawa. It was created as a mascot for the Sailor Moon anime which was created by the Toei Company and became popular after its release in 1990. The plush cat head was originally called "Cat-in-Crown" (cat-in-hat) which would be changed to the toy's current name.

In 2004, the Cat-in-Crown was one of several characters that were added to the 2004 edition of the Japanese-style card game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. In 2007, the Cat-in-Crown and other Sailor Moon characters were added to the second edition of the game which was titled

In 2010, the Cat-in-Crown was one of several characters that were featured on the cat ears merchandise items for the 2010 version of the Japanese-style card game Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. In 2014, the Cat-in-Crown was featured as an "Official Card" in the third edition of the game. In 2016, it was added to the card game Cardfight!! Vanguard: Legion Mate. In 2017, it was added to the card game Yggdrasil: The Sacred Tree.

In 2018, it was announced that a Cat-in-Crown will be included in the upcoming Disney Kingdoms card game. In 2019, it was announced that a Cat-in-Crown will be included in the upcoming Disney Fairies and Pinocchio card game.
